Give Hope Wings – Northwest Expedition a Triumphant Success!

The Give Hope Wings – Northwest Expedition reached their goal of providing 1,000 flights to patients in financial need who require medical care far from home by raising $250,000.

The journey took place from June 15 – July 6, 2019 flying a total of 17,500 km and landing at 35 airports in British Columbia, Northwest Territories, the Yukon and Alaska. Our pilots Dave McElroy, Lise Ash, Steve Drinkwater and Ian Porter along with the volunteer flight crew, Alexis Thind, Rani Tolton, Annamarie van der Meijden, Anna Rusinowski and O’Brian Blackall each played key roles, and engaged their networks, in order to achieve this impressive result by the completion of the three-week journey.

The expedition began with four successful community events in British Columbia. The launch event in Pitt Meadows and the stops in Quesnel, Prince George and Fort St. John allowed the pilots and flight crew to meet some of the patients who have flown through Hope Air and raised the profile of Hope Air.

  • Dave McElroy

    Dave learned to fly in Cranbrook in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and has flown more than 3300 hours in 29 different aircraft types. In 2014 Dave flew a Piper Comanche around the world, raising more than $150,000 for two charities: SickKids Foundation of Toronto and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance of Perth, Scotland. In 2015 the Royal Aero Club in London awarded him the Norton Griffiths Challenge Trophy. Learn More

    Steve Drinkwater

    Steve is the publisher at Canadian Aviator Publishing Ltd, publishers of Canadian Aviator and COPA Flight magazines, and serves as editor for the latter. His company also publishes and sells books with Canadian aviation themes online at The Aviator's Bookshelf.     Ian Porter

    Ian got his private pilot license at age 19, flying from a small, snow-covered airstrip in Ontario. After relocating to British Columbia, Ian quenched his thirst for adventure travel and flying by piloting Paragliders and Paramotors both in the mountains of British Columbia and in many countries around the world, launching and flying numerous previously un-flown routes.
